Sew: A slip

I needed a new slip I wanted a cotton half slip. I didn't want to buy one since I know they are expensive and I have a vintage pattern from my grandmother's sewing stash. This pattern she never used and I have taken it out and looked at it several times in the years since I inherited it. I wanted to sew a slip but.... Well now that I am on a mission to sew most of my clothing for this summer. Well the mission really is to not buy anything brand new only from the consignment shop or sew it and spend as little as possible. I bought a couple of yards of 100% cotton material to make a white blouse but instead I made this slip. It cost $3.50 since I have a bunch of elastic already I didn't have to buy that or the thread. I keep those things stocked piled.
It comes just below my knees since I love long skirts I want to make a long one as well. But I made this one with a certain skirt in mind. I will probably venture into making a full slip as well and add a little bit of lace to the bottom of this one and the longer half slip I will make since that will add a feminine touch to it.
I wore this under a skirt at the zoo the other day and it was so light and breathable I could hardly tell it was on. What I loved best was that it was from a pattern my grandmother bought around the time I was born and never used. It sat all those years in her pattern box and then in mine waiting for me to sew it.

  1. What a neat idea! And something grandma never thought would happen to an old pattern that was just sitting....waiting for you to find it! Delightful!

  8. How great! I wish I had some of my grandmothers old patterns. She was a avid sewer, but I don't have a lot of her things..don't even know what happened to them...I wish I had some of her fabric from way back when...great post. I loved the story and good for you for taking the time to make the slip.
