Sewing a tie.....

I am working on church clothes right now. Something I do almost every spring I love being able to make a new dress or skirt for Ash and I to wear to church. I used to make vests for Yguy when he was little but now that he is older I decided to make him a tie, him and hubby are getting new ties this spring made by me.
I started out by buying an old tie at the consignment shop and taking it apart. From this I made a pattern for Yguy's hubby's will have to be longer since he is alot taller and his ties we buy from a big and tall store. As I was taking it apart I studied how it was put together.
I bought a half yard of fabric of Yguy's choice and some interfacing. When I make hubbies tie I will use a different kind of interfacing if I can find the kind that are you suppose to use in ties. But if not this kind worked just fine. It was just plain interfacing not fusiable. You only sew a little on the machine most is by hand and I used the iron alot ironing creases etc.

And here it is done. I actually enjoyed making this alot. I think I will make alot more in the future especially for hubby since his ties are very expensive. Of course when you have to go to a specialty store to buy him clothes because of his height and wide shoulders you end up paying a price. But this way I can sew him ties and save money as well. This little project cost me about $3 if you add the cost of buying the "pattern" tie it was still well under $10. And that works for me, head on over to We are THAT Family for more great ideas!

  1. This is so neat! Every now and then I stumble over actual "tie" fabric at the fabric market here and always consider buying some to make my husband a tie.

  2. I didn't use actual tie fabric since I couldn't find it and yguy wanted this camy fabric. I used what I could find at walmart and it worked pretty good it will wrinkle more than the silk but it worked pretty well.

  4. What a sweet spring tradition! I always loved it when my mom made me clothes, and even though they're all outgrown and donated to Goodwill, I still have lots of good memories from those clothes. I'm sure your kids will love theirs, too!
